Question about the movie Anaconda, The hunt for the blood orchid?
Plz help me. I really need to know these infos cuz we need it for the quiz. We watched it but my classmates are soo noisy! and i have a hard time understanding their accent.

    1. What is the scientific name of the blood orchid?
    2. What is the name of the spider that can paralyze? (base on the movie)
3.Why are the anacondas in the movie that big?

Thank you.. your answers will really help me. Even if you don’t know all the answer. I think 1 answer is already helpful.

    1. Caladenia filifera
blood orchid (or Blood Spider Orchid)
    http://www.webace.com.au/~chook/orchids/ caladenia/filifera.html

    2. Not sure if either of these are the spider, but they belog to the same species and come from South America:

Brazilian wandering spider (Phoneutria spp.) or Armadeira (Phoneutria fera)
and South American ‘banana spider’ (Phoneutria nigriventer):
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brazilian_w andering_spider

One bite from a wandering spider delivers a dose of neurotoxin to the bloodstream strong enough to cause paralysis in a matter of minutes. For some especially unlucky individuals, the dose is fatal.

The Phoneutria fera and nigriventer are the two most commonly implicated as the most virulent of the Phoneutria spiders.

    3. Anacondas: The Hunt for the Blood Orchid (2004)
    http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0366174/

Computer-generated snakes were used so I guess they could make them any size they wanted for special effect.

In the first movie Annaconda (1997) (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0118615/) they used animatronic anacondas as well as CGI. During the filming of one scene the controls for the animatronic Anaconda shorted out, causing it to completely lose control. Some of the footage is included in the movie.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anaconda
Anacondas are four species of aquatic boa inhabiting the swamps and rivers of the dense forests of tropical South America.
See the section on size: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anaconda#Si ze

See also the wikipedia page on Giant Anacondas: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Giant_anaco nda where it states there have been reports of sightings of snakes upwards of 30 metres (98.4 feet) in size.

Anacondas normally only grow to size of 9 metres (30 ft), and 250 kilos in weight, but tales of truly gigantic specimens persist. Indeed, although some python species can grow longer in length, the anaconda, particularly the Green Anaconda, is the heaviest and largest in terms of diameter of all snakes, and is often considered the biggest snake in the world.

Perhaps the most well known and defining portrayal of giant anaconda in popular fiction is the 1997 film Anaconda, which portrayed a giant CGI anaconda hunting and killing several crew members from National Geographic, and its sequel Anacondas: The Hunt for the Blood Orchid.

Also have a look at http://www.extremescience.com/BiggestSna ke.htm for more information on anacondas.

    1. Caladenia filifera
    2. Will get back to you on this question.
    3. .There is some debate about the maximum size of anacondas, and there have been unverified claims of enormous snakes alleged to be as long as 30

Bridges of Madison County, The (1995)

    IMDB rating: 7.00

Plot: The path of Francesca Johnson’s future seems destined when an unexpected fork in the road causes her to question everything she had come to expect from life. While her husband and children are away at the Iowa state fair in the Summer of 1965, Robert Kincaid happens upon the Johnson farm and asks Francesca for directions to Rosamunde Bridge. He explains that he is on assignment from National Geographic magazine to photograph the bridges of Madison County. She agrees to show him to the bridges and thus begins the bittersweet and all-too-brief romance of her life. Through the pain of separation from her secret love and the stark isolation she feels as the details of her life consume her, she writes down the story of this four-day love affair in a 3-volume diary. The diary is found by her children among her possessions and alongside Robert Kincaid’s possessions after Francesca is dead. The message they take from the diaries is one of hope that they will do what is necessary to find happiness in their lives — whatever is necessary. After learning that Robert Kincaid’s cremated remains were scattered off Rosamunde Bridge and that their mother requested a similar disposition for her own ashes, the children must decide whether to honor their mother’s final wishes or bury her alongside their father as the family had planned. Adapted from the novel by Robert Waller, this is the story of love that happens just once in a lifetime — if you’re lucky.

bestsellers written by functioning illiterates (twilight, the notebook)?
while i know my statement is a bit harsh, i don’t think anyone who has read either of these novels would believe they are experiencing Pulitzer-level material. but when you have a good idea, it’s proof that the idea alone can overcome writing "filled with thesaurus abuse, and purple prosed filled mess". harlan ellison stated that "if you look at the crap judith krantz writes, you’ll know ants or aphids can do it." and robert waller’s "bridges of madison county" is on my list, too. can anyone come up with any other authors with bestsellers written so poorly, that they shouldn’t have been.
uhm, no, it’s not because i’m jealous of other’s success. if these people have success, more power to them. but as a consumer, when i read the back flap copy of a book to get a general idea of what i’m reading, and decide to purchase it based on the idea of the story, i expect a published author to be able to properly string together subject, predicate, and object. the object of my question is to discover other bestsellers whose authors could use a writing or even english class, or a better copyeditor.

Yeah I’ve heard the same for the Da Vinci code. I haven’t read it, but heard that the idea for the story is good, but the way in which it’s written is awful.

I agree, if you’re going to win an award for good story ideas, then great. But if you can’t write well then you obviously don’t deserve it. When I read a book, I want to read one that’s well written. I’m not going to put myself through bad writing just to see if the idea behind it was any good. It’s not my idea of a good book.

popular fiction is written and enjoyed by ‘the masses’ and not the elite literate ‘few’, so leave it alone because even those who don’t read Homer and Ovid need something else to read

and don’t put it down, the popular fiction of the 17th century is now considered ‘classic’

Mark Twain wrote for mass consumption, too, as did Dickens, and Lew Wallace, and the Brontes, and on and on … All of them were criticized, too, as being tripe for the masses, and not intellectually appealing.

I personally hated Eragon by Christopher Paolini. The style was godawful to read. It got a little better as the books progressed, but the first was pretty bad. I read it when I was younger, so I didn’t really noticed until I reread it recently. I realised that I could have written as well as he did.
But you have to account for the fact that he was only, what, 19? So he could have done a lot worse, and, like I said, he improved as the series went on.
    Luci | Dec 10, 2009

I think that, regardless of your personal opinions on Twilight, it’s a little bit uppity (and yes, harsh) of you to criticize someone who has written a bestselling novel when (I’m just guessing here) you probably haven’t. That’s the nature of art: it’s just as much about talent as it is about production. Almost 100 years ago an artist named Joseph Stella mounted a toilet in one of his galleries and signed it "R. Mutt." After it was shown in Paris it became one of the 20th century’s greatest and most talked about pieces. My point being, Twilight may be a toilet, but Stephenie Meyer wrote it and you didn’t. If you think you can do better, go right ahead.
    captaindestroyo | Dec 10, 2009

I have not read either of the books to which you have referred but I have to ask; from where does your question spring? Do you envy the fame and fortune of those you consider to be lesser writers? Is a presumed lack of appreciation for your own work embittering you? Remember what the unfulfilled need for acceptance did to John Kennedy Toole. An acrimonious point of view will severely limit your choice of subject matter, unless you choose to spend your talent writing about politics. I have not read Judith Krantz either, but if her work is indeed ‘crap’ then it will not endure the test of time. Channel your energies into your work and let the popular authors have their moment in the sun. While I was not overwhelmed by The Bridges of Madison County either at least the author referenced Yeats. I give him snaps for that. Best wishes.
    stormcrow | Dec 10, 2009

No matter what some other people who have no clue for good writing say, Eragon is an incredible book. The first bit of the first book is fairly boring. But the other books are AMAZING! It’s a giant battle scene the entire time, with action, romance, magic, dwarves, elves, dragons, and much more! Got to love it!
    SAMMY | Dec 10, 2009

Any of the 30 or so books - which were really just one book with 30 different titles - by John Norman. I know he’s easy to pick on because his ideas were so obnoxious and so obsessively repeated, but it isn’t just his sexism. Celine and Pound were Fascist bastards who wrote beautifully. Norman was a Godawful writer. There’s a reason why his books, which were absolutely everywhere about 25 years ago, have completely disappeared.

And you’re really being too harsh on Twilight. Twilight is neither the masterpiece its fans think it is or the total dreck that some others claim. It’s a pretty good story with some creepy elements that has been ridiculously successful, and the writing is quite decent.

Do you send magazines to anyone in particular? If you are sending them to a bigger base, they already have access to all of the mainstream magazines. My uncle sent us a lot of his old hunting/gun magazines and everyone enjoyed those.

My dog wont stop peeing on my bed and the couch!!!!?
I am so frustrated. I crate train my dog she is about a year old. I got her from a vet who found her when she "wandered" up to her door. I think someone dropped her off because they couldn’t handle her. Anyways i crate train for about 4-5 hrs a day let her out right away and still she comes back inside and pees on the couch and bed not to mention a few other places she urinates frequent . I am tired of washing all of the blankets and comforters on my bed. Now my couch smells I don’t have money for the $100 spot bot vacuum I just use my dirt devil that does nothing for my life .. I bought a plastic cover to go on the bed under the sheets which stinks like vinyl even after I washed it..thank goodness for that at least it didn’t go through the mattress this time. I let her outback a lot throughout the day she rolls in the wet grass digs in the mud and eats sticks and pine cones and barks when she hears other dogs howling and barking…what am I dealing with..!!!! She is wearing me out…HELP ME PLEASEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Great anwsers I felt so lost but I see all your points. I was taking her out in the beginning but it didnt seem to work and I thought she was just naughty but i guess dogs cant do things out of spite.. I work and cannot take her out every two hours my only option is to keep her in a room with pee pee pads all over the floor if I cannott crate for 4 hours . I will only be able to take her for a walk 3 times a day. Also she wont pee right away and its so cold outside! (in the beginning when i was trying to train by walks she would come right back in and pee anyways what to do ?)Also I live in a coldesac so I can only walk her back and forth passing maybe five homes before I have turn around. Its hard to walk her in the back yard its almost an acre and it has a lot of slopes and she like to go behind the brush..but nevertheless I will try walking her out front and see what that does.

Putting the dog in a crate for 4-5 hours and then letting her outside is neither crate training or house training. It’s just confinement. YOU have to house train her.
She’s coming back in and peeing because you haven’t taught her what you want her to do, which is eliminate outside.

House train your dog by taking her outside and staying with her until she obliges. Then immediately praise her. Take her out regularly and do the same thing every time. That’s the way to house train a dog. Once she learns what you want, then you can let her outside on her own.

The dog needs to go an actual walks. When you let her out she probably is so concerned with playing with sticks and such that she doesn’t use the bathroom. Walk her at least 3 times a day. Also, if the dog is peeing on furniture, she should not be allowed to go on them until it stops.

Have her checked for bladder infection. Do you crate her for 4-5 hours a day? If so, that’s probably what caused it. Google crate training. Dogs should only be crated two hours at most.

I would take the dog to the vet, my dog was going pee crazy in the house , which he never does.. he is house trained . he ended up having a bladder infection . He got a shot for it and is on meds for seven days.He is no longer peeing all over the house….yippee

Ok i crate train my 5 month old puppy and you have to give positive attention when she pees outside, like treats, praise, play with her toys. So that said if you mix a 1 part tide (powder form) 2 parts water spray it lightly over your couch, it will help with the smell and the dog wont want to pee there due to the smell of the detergent. DO NOT SPRAY WHILE DOG IS IN THE ROOM, let the mixture dry on your couch, then let your dog in.

When your first crate training your dog you need to let them out every 2 hours you cant leave them in the crate until they are completely potty trained. even then you shouldnt leave them in the crate for more then 5 hours.

The first thing you should do is keep her off the furniture. Whenever she tries to get up there, get her off right away and tell her "No" in a VERY stern voice. Also, it doesn’t sound like she’s really housebroken. Whenever you let her outside, you should stay out there with her while she does her business. Whenever she goes outside you need to praise, praise, praise her. Say "Good girl, pee pee outside" Get really excited with it. Keep repeating it whenever she goes and she will soon relate the word pee pee with outside. Whenever she has an accident anywhere in the house, you have to catch her in the act and say "No, or Bold or Bad" or whatever word you want to use, but say it in a very, very stern voice. Take her outside and say pee pee outside. If she finishes peeing outside praise her and say "Good girl, pee pee outside". If you keep doing this, she will catch on. She’ll see that going outside makes you happy and she will soon be an expert at it. This is the way I housebroke my dog and she was fully trained in about 17 days. She had an accident or two after that, but that’s it. Now she hasn’t had an accident in about 8 or 9 months and she just turned a year old. Be persistent with it, but also keep her off the furniture. Good Luck!!
